What is Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS)?

MPAS is the independent, private, nonprofit organization designated by the governor of Michigan to advocate for and protect the rights of people with disabilities in Michigan. MPAS services include information and referral, short- term assistance, selected individual and legal representation, systemic advocacy, monitoring, and training.  

 

Is Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) part of the Department of Human Services?

No, MPAS is not a state organization and it is not part of DHS. For more information on the Department of Human Services, please visit their website.

 

I have to go to court. Will Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) represent me?

You have to meet certain criteria to be a client for MPAS representation. We do not take any criminal cases. Please read our page "When Will MPAS Represent Me?" for more information.

 

Does Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) charge for their services?

No, we do not charge fees for any of our services. You do have to have a disability and meet our criteria.

 

Are my discussions with Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) confidential?

Yes, all discussions you have with MPAS will be kept confidential. You must give permission for MPAS staff to discuss your situation with others.
