MPAS Appoints New Deputy Executive Director

Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Inc. (MPAS) is pleased to announce that Michelle Roberts has been appointed as the agency’s new Deputy Executive Director.  MPAS, a nonprofit advocacy organization, protects the legal rights of people with disabilities in Michigan through free and confidential services that include information and referral, short-term assistance, selected individual and legal representation, systemic advocacy, monitoring, and training.

In her new role, Michelle Roberts will work closely with the Executive Director and provide daily oversight of MPAS to ensure the vision for moving the agency forward is accomplished.

“Michelle exemplifies the true meaning of advocacy, serving as a champion for the most vulnerable in our society,” said Elmer Cerano, MPAS Executive Director. “She has a passion for our clients, a deep knowledge of the agency, and is a proven leader. We have much to accomplish for our community in the years ahead and I know that Michelle will fight for disability rights across Michigan.”

Michelle Roberts holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees, in Psychology and Social Psychology, from Western Michigan University.  She has served in the mental health field as a Support Coordinator for Community Mental Health, a psychiatric care specialist for a private psychiatric hospital and a provider running apartment programs for adults with mental illness who were living independently. In 2002 Michelle Roberts joined MPAS as an advocate on the Community and Institutional Rights (CAIR) team. She was promoted to Director of Advocacy in 2005 and has managed in this capacity until her appointment to Deputy Executive Director in 2018.

"It is a great honor to be appointed to this position and have the opportunity to strengthen our agency’s advocacy work,” said Michelle Roberts. “I could not be more excited for where our agency is headed, and I look forward to leading our dedicated team as we share our deep commitment to disability rights.”
